Our History

Over 80 years ago, Simon Karagozian dropped out of school to make charms
in Manhattan’s famous Diamond District. He was only 15 years old.
Over the coming years, he would hone those skills; find a passion for fine jewelry
and eventually go on to found Jaymark Jewelers.

1960

Simon moved his jewelry wholesale manufacturing skills from the famed 47th Street Diamond district to Cold Spring, NY. Simon had a love for creating. His first business card for the business read “Simon Karagozian, Jeweler, Specializing in the Unusual.” This original work shop was located in a stall in what is now the Cold Spring Fitness Center on Rt. 9, just a gemstones throw away from our current workshop.

1970

Simon's jewelry repair and manufacturing services became highly regarded within the local community. Simon's daughter, Margaret, and son-in-law Jim joined the business and the company began to switch focus from wholesale manufacturing to retail sales. The name Jaymark Jewelers was born.

1975

With a growing demand for custom jewelry throughout the Hudson Valley, Jaymark needed to expand both the showroom and factory to increase production.  Jim Matero Sr., began plans to build a stand alone retail store for Jaymark. What they built is as you see it today, on Rt 9 in Cold Spring.

1983

Cold Spring was (and is!) a town built on strong community. Jim, Margaret, and Simon curated their new business  to meet their every need. From custom jewelry design, to jewelry service repair and cleaning, they built Jaymark into the business that it is today, and with pizazz! .

1985

Jim and Margaret's now grown children began to become more involved in the business. Their son Jimmy Jr. finished his GIA certification course to become a gemologist. His wife Melanie learned the ropes of sales and marketing from Margaret.

1986

Jim and Jimmy continued to hone their skills in custom jewelry design from Simon. Jim was published in the paper for creating "the world's first pure silver nativity scene". Little did they know, custom design would become a main pillar of their business. As Margaret said "[Clients] seem to like the idea of seeing the work done and the reasonable price they get by buying direct [from a manufacturer\designer].

1995

Jimmy began to leave his mark on the business with the dot com era.  He computerized our sales system and inventory, built the company's first website, and pioneered a new method for jewelers around the nation to track and analyze their businesses.  He spent his freetime raising his family and working his way up to be Chief of the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department. He and Melanie took over management of Jaymark from Jim and Margaret around this time as well.

2010

When you walk into the store today, you'll probably meet James. He is the fourth generation of Jaymark Jewelers and Simon’s great-grandson. He is also a Graduate Gemologist and taking Jaymark to the next level of impeccable service. Taking over the business from his father in 2011, he is committed to bringing the best of the best to this region, and a level of technology his great-grandfather Simon could only dream of.

We invite you to step in to our store. We’d welcome the opportunity to meet you and create a piece of fine jewelry or an engagement ring you will treasure forever. We’re proud of what we do, and, we think Simon would be proud, too. To our next generation and beyond!
