December is fortunate enough to have FOUR birthstones to feature: Turquoise, Blue Topaz, Blue Zircon and Tanzanite. Today, we will focus just on tanzanite as it is the highlight of our December birthstone jewelry collection.
Tanzanite is a more modern gemstone, commercialized only in 1968 by Tiffany & Co. It is named after its region of origin, Tanzania, and is a member of the zoisite mineral family. In its natural state, tanzanite is actually a reddish brown color. It is then treated under heat to bring out its famous rich bluish purple color.
One unique feature of tanzanite is its trichroism. This means that under special light, three colors are actually visible in this stone: blue, violet, and burgundy. This trichroism is what gives tanzanite this rich bluish purple hue which looks magnificent when set in white gold with diamond.
Tanzanite is a softer gemstone, ideal for earrings and necklaces. Like emerald, it certainly makes a dazzling ring, but remember to wear it with care!
